Beneath the façade
and bravado
and opinions
and gavel
beyond the world traveler
seeking to belong
words spilling dreams
spinning catchers
under the stars
moonbeams weaving stories
behind collections of burnt castles
sunlight casting shadows
shards of lies
and truths
and desperation
between phoenix rising
ashes to ashes
brushstrokes and pens
mother and son
father and daughter
daughter and mother--

Stands a little miss
   a pixie cut of chestnut
   a billowy taffeta dress
   checkered in blue and white
   and round toes Mary Jane’s.
She’s a loner this one
seeking connection in
her own inner world
the hills and valleys
riverbeds and oceans
twinkling whispers in the wind
eyes for her father
ears to the ground--
beyond, and all around
heart for the Great One
unknown
the world tries to change her
and name her
and she fights for breath
above is a hand on her shoulder
with infinite care,
bending the sky to certainty--
   there hope lives.
